A Los Angeles-based company has produced a new lip balm that it claims boosts energy, suppresses hunger and burns fat.

‘Burner Balm’ contains a trio of natural ingredients that all reduce appetite: Hoodia extract, chromium picolinate and natural caffeine, which also restores alertness. Natural green tea extract has also been added for increased energy and metabolism.

Artichokes are delicious and easy to make but butter garlic dip is really fattening!  Here is a low -fat dip to use with artichokes.

Garlic Dip
1 cup lowfat yogurt, plain
1 Tbsp chopped parsley
1 Tbsp chives
2 tsp chili sauce
½ tsp garlic salt
1/8 tsp pepper

Refrigerate for one hour.

Choosing:
The tighter and more compact the artichoke, the fresher.

Cooking:
Use a large pot and place a steamer with a small amount of water in the pot. Put the lid on top and steam them for 45 minutes.

Earth Day is just around the corner April 22nd and we hope that as the day draws near, you’ve been thinking about what you can do to make our world a greener, healthier place. Here are some recipes and resources for incorporating a greener diet into your life, not just on Earth Day, but every day.

 

Earth-Day Recipes 

 

Breakfast: Smoothie
Ingredients
2 cups Sliced strawberries (one-pint basket)
1 Ripe banana, peeled
1 cup Chopped, pitted and peeled mango (1 large)
1 cup Strawberry-flavored nonfat yogurt
8 Ice cubes
1 cup 2-percent milk
Whole strawberries for garnish

 

Preparation
Combine ingredients and blend until smooth. Pour into large glasses and garnish with whole strawberries.

Lunch:  Brown Rice, Asparagus and Tomato Salad:
Ingredients
1 cup Instant brown rice
12  Medium spears fresh asparagus, cooked and cut into 1 inch pieces
2 Medium tomatoes
2 1/2 tsp Lemon juice
2 tsp Olive oil
1/8 tsp Salt
1/8 tsp Black pepper
1/4 cup Minced chives or green onions green parts only
2 tsp Minced fresh dill

 

Preparation
Bring 1 cup water to boil in medium saucepan. Stir in rice. Bring water to a boil again. Cover. Reduce heat to low. Simmer 5 minutes. Remover from heat. Stir rice; cover again. Set aside 5 minutes or until water is absorbed and rice is tender. Fluff with fork. Set aside. Meanwhile, place asparagus in large salad bowl. Core tomatoes over a separate bowl to catch juice. Dice tomatoes, reserving juice. Add tomatoes to asparagus. Stir together 1 1/2 tbs reserved tomato juice, lemon juice, oil, salt and pepper in small bowl. Stir in chives and dill. Add rice to salad bowl. Pour in dressing Toss gently, but well.

 Lunch: Arugula, Basil and Cheese Pizza:

 Ingredients

10 oz Pizza crust, uncooked, about 12 inches

2 tsp Uncooked cornmeal

2 Medium garlic clove(s), chopped

1 cup Arugula

1 cup Basil, fresh

1/2 tsp Olive oil

1 tbsp Grated Parmesan cheese

1/8 tsp Table salt, or to taste

1/8 tsp Black pepper, or to taste

2 oz Semisoft goat cheese 


Preparation

Heat grill. Set pizza stone on grill rack and allow to get very hot. If you do not have a pizza stone, preheat oven to 500°F and prepare pizza as directed below, except bake it on a nonstick sheet pan until crust browns on edge, about 10 to 12 minutes. Sprinkle cornmeal on an upside-down cookie sheet or a pizza peel. Lay pizza crust on cornmeal. Place garlic, arugula, basil, olive oil, Parmesan, salt and pepper in a food processor and process to form a paste; spread over pizza dough. Dot with goat cheese. Slide pizza onto preheated stone, cover and let cook until crust is crisp and puffed, about 10 minutes. Remove to cutting board and cut into four slices. Yields 1 slice per serving.

 

Dinner: Veggie Kebabs
Ingredients:
3/4 cup sliced fresh mushrooms, any kind
2 red bell peppers, chopped
1 green bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 onion
,cut into 1-inch pieces1/4 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 clove garlic, minced
2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
1 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

 

Preparation
Preheat grill to medium heat and string mushrooms and peppers alternately on metal or soaked wooden skewers. Combine remaining ingredients in a bowl and brush onto skewered vegetables. Place skewers on oiled grill and grill 4 to 6 minutes, turning occasionally and basting with oil. Mushrooms should be tender when finished.
